Our economic system plays a large part in why there is not yet effective engagement with climate change. That system relies on a narrative of human nature that emphasises selfishness. What if our nature is opposite? I focus on a core characteristic of being human, that we are a social species and how much we therefore want to contribute valuably to the larger world of which we are part.  What gets in our way is not selfishness, but our shame at being implicated in a system that does not facilitate us all to thrive within a thriving planet. By alleviating the shame, we can create psychological safety, which I think is a pre-requisite for the full, creative and fast action we need.
